Avoiding Pickpockets

Pickpocketing can be a common problem in many cities around the world, including in Italy. Here are some tips to avoid pickpockets while in Italy:

  1. A crossbody bags on my travels in Italy. A crossbody bag keeps your hands free and your belongings close by and in your line of sight.

  2. Italian law requires that you keep your passport with you at all times. Your passport, as well as your wallet, phone, and other valuables should be kept in a secure location, such as a zippered pocket, and keep them close to your body. Avoid leaving your bag or purse unattended, even for a moment.

  3. You do not need to carry a lot of cash with you in Italy. Cash may be needed at small cafes or shops but the majority of shops and restaurants will take your credit card or apple pay.

  4. Be aware of your surroundings: Be mindful of who is around you and keep an eye out for suspicious behavior. Pickpockets often work in teams, with one distracting you while the other steals your belongings.

  5. Avoid crowded areas: Pickpockets often target crowded places like markets, train stations, and tourist attractions. Try to avoid these areas during peak times, or at least keep your guard up when you’re in them.

  6. Be cautious on public transportation: Pickpockets often target people on public transportation, especially during rush hour. Keep your belongings close and be wary of anyone who seems to be getting too close.

  7. Use a money belt: Consider using a money belt to keep your cash and credit cards safe. Don’t store your wallet in your back pocket

  8. Don’t flaunt your wealth: Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or carrying large amounts of cash. This can make you a target for pickpockets.

  9. By following these tips, you can reduce your risk of becoming a victim of pickpocketing while in Italy.
